This page contains Konnakol exercises for the guitar for the purpose of improvisation. Exercises should also be practised in different speeds and groupings. The first example demonstrates how to play in different speeds, in 2nd and 3rd speeds the phrase should be repeated until it takes up one cycle of ‘Adi tala’. The idea behind this repetition is that it helps internalise the length of specific rhythmic cycles and the various subdivisions within them.

To start with, here are three different phrases based on the following groupings ie 7+7+2, 5+5+5 and 10+10+10.
