This page will contain Konnakol exercises for the guitar for the purpose of improvisation. Exercises should also be practiced in different speeds and groupings. The first example here is a simple demonstration of how to play in different speeds, in 2nd and 3rd speeds the phrase should be repeated until it takes up one cycle of ‘Adi tala’. The idea behind this repetition is that it helps internalize the length of specific rhythmic cycles and the various sub divisions within them. Another way to put it would be (The phrases on this page will be based on south indian rhythmic cadences and rhythmic cycles).
